Tis the Season…

…For a Great Christmas Playlist

Last year on a now defunct Tumblr blog I outlined what I thought were the ten best Christmas songs for folks who hate Christmas music, don’t celebrate the holiday, or get involuntarily spasms after hearing 100 renditions of “The Christmas Song.” While I have no personal issue with Christmas itself (or gay folks serving in the military, Rick Perry), I generally can’t handle sitting around listening to red and green holiday tunes simply because the season permits. There’s just something about the saccharine crooning of Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas” and even Destiny’s Child fluttering “8 Days of Christmas” that makes me feel like I lost my best friend, my dog ran away, someone hurt my feelings, and I vomited on myself all at once. So to not completely sound like the Grinch and tepidly cope with the unfortunate soundtrack of the season, I’ve once again made my own Christmas playlist…jingle it and jam on it.

James Brown-Santa Claus, Go Straight to the Ghetto

Carla Thomas-Gee Whiz, It’s Christmas

Mariah Carey-Joy to the World

In terms of awesome Christmas songs, “All I Want for Christmas is you,” is a given, but this live performance speaks to my heart! The intro gave me chills and that drum machine breakdown into the chorus?! Ooooh weee!

Amy Winehouse-I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus

NSYNC-Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays

Save your judgment! That keyboard says it all.

Donny Hathaway-This Christmas

No one should ever, ever, ever, EVER, remake this song again.

The Boys-Christmas Cheer

The Temptations-Silent Night

from ‘Beat Street’-Christmas Rap

Wham!-Last Christmas-This is only a mention because I’ve loved it for so long and wanted to give some other folks a chance. Also another song that should never ever, ever, EVER be remade.

Kurtis Blow-Christmas Rapping

She & Him-Rockin Around the Christmas Tree-As far as new Christmas albums go, this rockabilly take on the classics is pretty refreshing.

Otis Redding-Merry Christmas Baby

Quad City DJs-What You Want For Christmas-Viva la 90s bass music

 Merry Christmas, y’all!
